Breast augmentation, technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breast. The procedure can be performed to balance a difference in breast size, to correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy, and as a reconstructive technique following breast surgery. An increase of one or more bra cup sizes is achieved. Breast augmentation can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence, but it won't necessarily change your looks to match an ideal. The best candidates for breast augmentation are women who are looking for improvement in the way they look. If you are physically healthy and realistic in your expectations, you may well be an excellent candidate for this procedure. Types of implantsDr. Burt Greenberg uses a saline implant placed behind the pectoral muscle or, a silicone gel implant placed beneath the breast. Dr. Greenberg currently participates in Institutional Review Board reviews assessing the ongoing efficacy of the silicone gel breast implants. The utilization of this particular implant requires patient participation in these ongoing, approved studies. Planning your surgery.Your initial consultation will include a physical and complete review of your medical history, including mammographic data. A mammogram will be obtained, if indicated. Computer imaging to assess possible outcome strategies, as well as a computer presentation of several of Dr. Burt Greenberg's cases, will allow both you and Dr. Burt Greenberg to choose the proper implant size. Careful measurements of your chest wall, the circumference of your chest, the base diameter and the projection of your current breasts, and a comparison between your right and left breasts are taken by Dr. Burt Greenberg. Breast augmentation is relatively straight forward, but, as with any operation, it carries some risks. The most common problems are capsular contracture, which is a capsule around the implant. Dr. Burt Greenberg's use of smooth walled implants, post-operative massage, and your rapid return to normal activities such as exercise and swimming, all help to significantly reduce this possibility. Other possible difficulties with breast augmentation include infection, exposure, asymmetry, displacement and deflation. Nipples may occasionally exhibit altered sensitivity or become numb. Each patient is provided with implant data from either the Mentor or McGann manufacturers. Occasionally, according to company data, breast implants may break or leak. Rupture can occur as a result of injury or even from the normal compression of the breast through movement. If the saline-filled implant breaks, the implant will deflate in a few hours and the salt water will be excreted in the urine. If the gel-filled implant breaks, the gel may collect within the implant capsule or may migrate into normal breast tissue. There may be a change in the shape or firmness of the breast. Both types of breaks may require a second operation and replacement of the leaking implant. The surgeryDr. Burt Greenberg performs his breast cosmetic augmentations in The Great Neck Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Facility, which is accredited at the highest level ("C" level) by the American Association of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities (AAAASF). General anesthesia is used and provided by board-certified anesthesiologists who work exclusively with Dr. Burt Greenberg. Operative time is approximately one hour and thirty minutes with an additional one to two hours spent in the recovery room. Dr. Burt Greenberg, most commonly uses an inframammary incision placed approximately 4 cm. in transverse dimension and located within the inframammary fold. Only infrequently does Dr. Burt Greenberg perform an intra-areola approach or the axillary (armpit) approach. After your surgeryFollowing the procedure, a muscle relaxant as well as analgesic, sleeping pills, and antibiotics are prescribed. You will likely feel tired and sore for a few days following the procedure, but you will be up and around in 24-48 hours and driving within several days. Most patients return most normal daily activities between five to seven days following the procedure. A breast garment and/or sports bra is needed for the first one to two weeks in order to stent or immobilize your breast and reduce any discomfort. Incisions will be firm and tender for at least six weeks until they then begin to fade. Routine mammograms should be continued after breast augmentation for women who are in the appropriate age group. Mammographic technicians use a special technique to insure a reliable reading. Regular examination by Dr. Burt Greenberg is required during the first year, followed by yearly check-ups. Dr. Burt Greenberg has great experience in this area of body contouring and change and would be most happy to discuss these procedures with you in great detail. |
