A forehead or brow-lift is a procedure that restores a more youthful and fresh look to the area above the eyes. The procedure corrects drooping of brows and improves the horizontal lines and furrows that can make a person appear angry, sad, or tired. In a forehead-lift, the muscles and tissues that cause the furrowing or drooping are either removed or altered to smooth the forehead, raise the eyebrows, and minimize frown lines. Dr. Burt Greenberg performs a forehead-lift in one of two ways, the endoscopic forehead-lift or the direct skin excision forehead-lift. Both techniques yield similar results, smooth the forehead skin, and add a more animated appearance. Certain patients may be more suitable candidates for one procedure versus the other. A forehead-lift, in general, is most commonly performed in the forty to sixty age range to minimize the visible effects of aging. However, it can also help people of any age who have developed furrows or frown lines from stress or muscle activity. Individuals with inherited conditions such as a low, heavy brow or furrow lines above the nose can help achieve a more alert and refreshed look with this procedure. A forehead-lift is often performed in conjunction with a face-lift to provide a smoother overall look to the face. Blepharoplasty (cosmetic surgery of the eyelid) may be performed at the same time as the forehead-lift, especially if a patient has significant skin overhanging the upper eyelids. Sometimes patients who believe they need upper eyelid surgery find that a forehead-lift better meets their surgical goals. A forehead-lift can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence, but it won't necessarily change your looks to match an ideal. The best candidates for a brow-lift or forehead-lift are those looking for improvement, not perfection. Before deciding to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with Dr. Greenberg.

PLANNING YOUR SURGERY

To better understand how a forehead-lift might change your appearance, look into a mirror and place the palm of your hands at the outer edge of your eyes, above your eyebrows. Gently draw the skin up to raise the brow and the forehead area. That is approximately what a forehead-lift would do for you. Your goals and expectations will be discussed during the consultation with Dr. Burt Greenberg. The surgical procedure will be thoroughly explained. Medical conditions that cause problems during or after the procedure such as: uncontrolled, high blood pressure, blood clotting problems, or a tendency to develop scars will also be discussed.

THE SURGERY

The surgical technique will be performed in Dr. Greenberg's facility, The Great Neck Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Facility, which is accredited at the highest level ("C" level) by the American Association of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities (AAAASF). General anesthesia is used and provided by board-certified anesthesiologists who work exclusively with Dr. Burt Greenberg. Depending upon the type of anatomical problems and in conjunction with the patient's desires, Dr. Burt Greenberg will either choose the classic forehead-lift which utilizes a coronal incision towards the top portion of the head or an endoscopic procedure (direct brow-lift) with an incision at the junction of the forehead hairline. Dr. Burt Greenberg will explain the advantages and disadvantages of each of these types of procedures in detail prior to scheduling. Following the procedure, considerations as to whether or not cosmetic surgery of the eyelid then can be performed. Additionally, some patients do require the additive use of collagen. Botox is generally not indicated any longer following the forehead lift since special attention is taken to weaken the procerus and corrugator muscles or special muscles that are present at the junction of the forehead and upper nasal region.

AFTER YOUR SURGERY

Most patients are up and about in a day or two and are back to normal activities in one week to ten days. Vigorous physical activity such as, jogging, bending, heavy housework or any activity that increases your blood pressure should be avoided for the first several weeks. Most of the visible signs of surgery fade within three weeks. Minor swelling and bruising can be concealed easily with special, camouflaging make-up. A forehead-lift does not stop the clock, however, we can minimize the appearance of aging for years. As time passes, it may be necessary or even required to repeat the procedure again.
